A 10-Year Case Study on CBD and Dravet Syndrome
Can CBD help reduce seizures in patients with Dravet syndrome?
A newly published case report in the Journal of Chiropractic Medicine explores this question through a 10-year observation of a pediatric patient diagnosed with Dravet syndrome, a rare and severe form of epilepsy.
The study followed the patient from age 7 to 16 and documented a significant reduction in seizure frequency while using a whole-plant cannabinoid protocol. At the start of treatment, the patient experienced up to 28 seizures per day. Over time, this
was reduced to fewer than 10 mild monthly episodes.

What Is Dravet Syndrome?
Dravet syndrome is a genetic form of epilepsy typically associated with mutations in the SCN1A gene. It often begins in infancy and is characterized by frequent, treatment-resistant seizures.
Many patients require multiple medications, and long-term management can be challenging due to limited response and potential side effects
Study Overview: CBD for Dravet Syndrome
The case study, titled:
“Whole Plant Cannabinoid Nonpharmaceutical Treatment Protocols for a Young Male
With Dravet Syndrome”
(doi:10.1016/j.jcm.2025.09.014)
Explores a nonpharmaceutical approach using whole-plant hemp-derived cannabinoid formulations, supported by dietary and environmental changes.
The protocol focused on supporting the body’s regulatory systems, including the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the microbiota-gut-brain axis (MGBA).
Key Findings from the Case Study
- Patient diagnosed with Dravet syndrome (SCN1A mutation)
- Whole-plant CBD protocol administered at 1 mg/kg/day
- Approximately 90% reduction in seizure frequency within two weeks
- Stabilization to 7–10 mild seizures per month by age 16
- Gradual discontinuation of pharmaceutical treatments over four years
- No reported adverse side effects during the 10-year period
Quote From the Lead Author
“This case demonstrates the potential of whole-plant hemp formulations as a complementary approach for severe seizure disorders,” said Dr. Trent Jones, lead author and founder of Apothio, LLC. “We observed long-term stability and functional improvement without the adverse effects associated with standard pharmaceuticals.”

Long-Term Outcomes and Observations
Over the 10-year period, the patient demonstrated improvements beyond seizure reduction,
including:
- Improved sleep patterns
- Increased cognitive engagement
- Enhanced daily functioning and activity
The study suggests that long-term consistency and a systems-based approach may play a role in supporting neurological stability.
What This Means for CBD and Seizure Disorders
While this is a single case study and more research is needed, it contributes to growing interest in the potential role of cannabinoids in managing seizure disorders.
For patients, caregivers, and clinicians exploring additional options, studies like this provide insight into long-term outcomes and alternative approaches.
